Segment V Port Ball Valve

Segment V Port Ball Valve

A V port ball valve is a type of ball valve with a V-shaped ball bore or V-shaped valve seat. A V-port ball valve has the advantage of being used as a control valve which is not common in most ball valves. The main difference between a V-notch ball valve and other ball valve types is the contoured V bore in the ball which could be 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, or 90° degree angle. A V-notch ball valve helps to produce an equal percentage of fluid flow characteristics for better fluid flow control. V-notch ball valves have been found to offer better flow control relative to larger valves and more expensive ball valves. A V-port ball valve helps to efficiently control fluid flow in a pipeline. The flow in a V-port ball valve is almost linear. V-port ball valves are designed and manufactured with high strength because high-velocity fluid flows through them. This is because without high strength such high-velocity fluids can damage these valves.

Advantages of Segment V Port Ball Valve

Precise Flow Control
The openings of v-ball control valves are available at different angles (15⁰, 30⁰, 60⁰, and 90⁰), which offer equal percentage flow characteristics. Rotating the ball anywhere between 0⁰ and 90⁰ helps achieve the desired flow rate. Precise flow control allows for better accuracy of fluid flow in piping systems.

Low Pressure Drop
The flow path of fluids through the V-port ball valves is usually straight. The straight flow minimizes pressure drop across the valve. Compared to other control valves, v-port ball valves have a relatively high flow coefficient (Cv or Kv). The high Cv (or Kv) value makes it possible to use smaller V-ball control valves to achieve the same flow rate as other larger control valves.

High Shut-off Pressure
A quarter turn on the ball is sufficient to open or close a v-port ball valve. The ease in operation makes it possible to open or close the valve at higher working pressure. Hence, lower torque actuators are ideal for its operation.

Bubble Tight Shut-off
The principle of floating ball used in V-ball valves helps in providing a bubble-tight shut-off and aids in flow regulation. When it closes, the ball presses against the seat by the upstream pressure. This provides an air-tight seal. The bubble-tight seal makes V-port ball valves suitable for gas applications.

How Does a Segment V-Port Ball Valve Work?

Valve Body Structure: The interior of the valve body features a V-shaped passage, and the surface of the ball has corresponding V-shaped grooves. This design allows the ball to control fluid flow as it rotates.

Ball Rotation: When the valve is closed, the ball is rotated to a position where the V-shaped passage is sealed, preventing fluid flow. To open the valve, the ball is rotated to a position where the V-shaped passage aligns, allowing fluid to pass through.

Fluid Control: Due to the V-shaped passage on the ball, precise fluid control is achieved as the ball rotates. Adjusting the rotation angle of the ball enables regulation of the fluid flow, giving the valve throttling capabilities.

Operation Modes: The V-port ball valve (segment ball valve) can be operated manually or automatically. In manual operation, a handle or handwheel is used to rotate the ball. In automatic operation, an electric motor or other actuators are employed to rotate the ball.

Sealing Performance: The design of the V-port ball valve enhances sealing performance, reducing the likelihood of fluid leakage. When the ball is rotated to the closed position, the V-shaped passage forms an effective seal, preventing fluid from passing through.

Components of a Segment V Port Ball Valve

Some of the main components include:

V Type Ball Valve

Ball
The ball is a sphere with a hole in its center, known as the bore.
Normally, the bore serves as the flow path for the fluid when the cross-section of the fluid flow path aligns with the bore. Otherwise, the flow is throttled or constricted. In the case of a V-port ball valve, the ball has a V-shaped bore.

Stem
The stem connects the ball to the control mechanism that rotates it. It has packings, such as O-rings, to seal the stem and bonnet, preventing fluid leakage.
The stem may be manually operated using a lever or handwheel, or it can be operated by an electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuator.

Bonnet
The bonnet is an extension of the valve housing that encloses and protects the stem and its packing. It may be welded or bolted to the valve body. Made of durable metal, the bonnet covers the opening where the stem connects to the external control mechanism.

Seat
The valve seats provide sealing between the ball and the valve body. The upstream seat is located near the inlet side of the V-port ball valve, while the downstream seat is located on the opposite side, near the discharge side.

Valve Housing
The valve housing or body contains all the internal components. Made from strong, rigid metal, it protects the valve components and provides access to the external control mechanism that rotates the ball.

Types of Segment V Port Ball Valve

Manual V port ball valve

This is a type of V notch ball valve which is powered manually. A manual V port ball valve has a handle or lever where the valve operator applies torque to open or close the valve. This means that an operator must operate the V port ball valve by rotating the handle. One advantage of a manually powered V port ball valve is that it is cheaper relative to a valve powered by an actuator. A manual V port ball valve is advantageous in that it still works even when the rest of the system is not working for example due to power outage. Manual V notch ball valves are also simple and they can be automated in future if the user finds it necessary.

Actuated V port ball valve

This is a V notch ball valve that is powered by an actuator. An actuator is a component used in V port ball valves to turn it on and off that is to open or close fluid flow respectively. One advantage of an actuated V port ball valve is that it can operate independently and accurately without a valve operator. However, an actuated V port ball valve is expensive relative to manual counterpart. Some of the actuators that can be used in a V port ball valve include a hydraulic actuator, pneumatic actuator, and electric actuator.

Three-piece V port ball valve

A three-piece V port ball valve is a ball valve in which the valve body is divided into three parts which are body and two end caps. All three pieces are connected through bolts connection. This type of V port ball valve enhances easier removal of the seat, ball, and stem from the pipeline. A three-piece V port ball valve makes it for the valve opera to clean dirt, replace seals and seats, and polish minor scratches on the valve ball without completely removing the ball valve from the piping system. The main advantage of a three-piece V port ball valve is that it can be repaired and cleaned without removing it from the pipeline. However, three-piece V port ball valves are very expensive relative to other ball valves.

Side entry V port ball valve

Side entry V port ball valves are ball valves that are assembled from their sides using bolts and nuts. Side entry V port ball valve assembly consists of three or two pieces of the valve body. Each piece of the valve body is assembled by use of a bolt or stud similar to joining flange pieces. Side entry V port ball valves are made from forge metallic material. In this case, each piece of the side entry ball valve body is forged, and then the pieces are assembled. The forging manufacturing method helps to reduce defects that arise when a V port ball valve is made through the casting method. Side entry V port ball valves are easy to assemble and the internal components of the valve are easy to align.

Top entry V port ball valve

The top entry V port ball valve is a valve that is assembled from the top side. The design of a top entry V port ball valve makes it easy to access the seats and ball for cleaning and repair works without necessary removing the valve from the pipeline. Top entry V port ball valves are preferred for applications that need large valves. A top entry V port ball valve would be suitable in cases where the valve should not be removed from the pipeline. The top entry V port ball valve is made using casting method. As such, a top entry ball valve needs to undergo non-destructive tests (NDTS) to ensure it is free from casting defects and thus be leakage-proof.

FAQ

Q: What is a V-port ball valve?

A: A v-port ball valve is a control valve with a v-shaped seal or v-shaped ball. The 'v' shape allows for better fluid control. The molded v-bore differentiates the v-port ball valves from other ball valve types.

Q: What is a segmented ball valve?

A: High fluid control accuracy: The segmented ball valve features a ball with a V-shaped port, providing a large control range for precise adjustment of fluid flow and pressure. It enables more accurate flow control, ensuring precise and reliable fluid control.

Q: What is the difference between full port and V-port?

A: The difference can be summed up fairly simply: Full port: The valve port is the same diameter as the pipe. Standard port: The valve port is smaller than the pipe's diameter. Exact port size varies but generally the port size is that of one pipe size smaller than the valve in question.

Q: What is the difference between V ball and ball valve?

A: Globe valves divert flow and use a plug to control the flow exiting the valve. V-Balls allow material to flow straight through the valve reducing pressure drops. V-Balls also have higher flow coefficients (Cv) compared to the same size globe valve.

Q: What is a port ball valve?

A: A full-port ball valve, also known as a full-bore ball valve, is a type of valve commonly used to control the flow of fluids through pipes and tubing. It is called "full-port" because it has an internal diameter that is the same size as the pipe it is connected to.

Q: What is the difference between a segmented ball valve and a globe valve?

A: A segmented ball valve is more expensive than a butterfly and most other ball valves of the same materials and pressure class, but it will typically be half the price of a globe valve with the same flow capacity.

Q: What is V notch ball valve?

A: INTRODUCTION. The V–Notch Ball Valve gives non-clogging, high capacity, straight through flow control of fluids containing pulp and paper stock or slurries and fluids containing suspended solids or fibrous materials. V-Notch Ball Valve is quarter turn valve with a. segment Ball.

Q: How do I know if my ball valve is full port?

A: Full port means that the bore size is about the same as the pipe you'll connect the valve to. Standard is usually one nominal pipe size below that. So, for example, let's say you need a forged ball valve for a ¾" pipe. If you need a full port valve, then the hole will be about ¾" in diameter.

Q: What is the difference between ball valve and V-port ball valve?

A: V-port valves offer better and more consistent control than traditional round ported ball valves. We offer this valve with the control port cast and machined into the ball, not in the seat, which allows for much better flow characteristics and eliminates the need to replace seats.

Q: How many types of ball valves are there?

A: There are four general body styles of ball valves: single body, split body, top entry, and welded. There are four general types of ball valves: full port, standard port, reduced port, and v port.

Q: What is a V-notch ball valve?

A: INTRODUCTION. The V–Notch Ball Valve gives non-clogging, high capacity, straight through flow control of fluids containing pulp and paper stock or slurries and fluids containing suspended solids or fibrous materials. V-Notch Ball Valve is quarter turn valve with a. segment Ball.

Q: What is the difference between a ball valve and a V ball valve?

A: A v-port ball valve's flow characteristics are different from that of standard port ball valves. The fluid flow through a v-port ball valve increases linearly with an increase in shaft rotation. V-ball control valves have high strength to withstand the high velocity of fluids flowing through the valves.
