3 Piece Ball Valve

3 Piece Ball Valve

A three-piece ball valve has one main valve body and two pipe connectors. The pipe connectors are welded or threaded to the pipes. Because of the three-piece structure, the valve body and trims can be removed without interfering with the pipe connections. After installing a 3-piece ball valve, the worn-out components like the ball, seat, or stem can be replaced independently and quickly. It is also more expensive than a two-piece ball valve due to its intricate structure. But, the valve can remain in service for its intended lifespan with low long-term maintenance cost.

Advantages Of 3 Piece Ball Valves

Sound Design: Since this type of valve has three pieces and it has a simple, lightweight design, it can easily be assembled or installed and disassembled with no hassle.

Fluid Resistance Is Low: The resistance coefficient is equal to the pipe diameter of the same length for 3 piece ball valves. This ensures that fluids can flow easily, and it reduces the chance of blockages being formed. In addition, most of these valves are full bore designs, which allows more fluids to be transported.

High Sealing Performance: Changing seals and seats is more cost-effective in this type of ball valve. Since they close tightly when welded, it forms a strong seal that prevents leaks.

Operational Ease: A 3 Piece ball valve is suited for frequent and rapid opening and closing without friction. To fully open or close it, the lever or driving device needs to be turned to 90 degrees, which also facilitates remote operation.

Easy Maintenance: 3 Piece valves facilitate easy maintenance since the central body can be removed for servicing without removing the pipe connectors or end caps. This way, the line can continue to function without shutting down completely for maintenance. In addition, the body can be moved and welded with the trim out of the way, keeping the internal structure sound and damage-free.

3 Piece Ball Valve
The Construction of 3-Piece Ball Valves

Three-piece ball valves are manufactured with one main body and two pipe connectors. The pipe connectors are typically threaded or welded to a pipe. This enables the main body to be easily removed for cleaning or repairs without having to remove the pipe connectors. Full port and bidirectional shutoff options are also available.

After installing a 3-piece ball valve, wear components - such as balls, ball seats and stems - can be replaced quickly and independently. The biggest benefit here is that the valve can remain in service for its intended lifecycle while operators enjoy low long-term maintenance costs.

Components of a three-piece ball valve

Handwheel/actuator
The handwheel is the component on a three-piece ball valve on which the valve operator applies torque to open or close the valve. A handwheel is used where the three-piece ball valve is manual. If the valve is not manual, then it is operated by an actuator. An actuator is a device integrated with the three-piece ball valve to provide torque for opening and closing the valve. Some of the available actuators for a three-piece ball valve are pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical actuators.

Valve Body
The valve body is the main component of a three-piece ball valve as it serves as the main barrier against pressure and it houses all the internal parts of the valve. The valve body is made of strong materials relative to other parts of the valve like seats and seals to ensure it has high strength enough to withstand high pressure and high temperatures. Most three-piece ball valves are used in high-pressure applications and thus their bodies are made of strong materials like stainless steel, carbon steel, and cast iron, among others.

Stem/shaft
A stem/shaft is the component of a three-piece ball valve that is used to connect the ball and the actuator so that it can transmit the force or torque required to open/close the valve. The stem is also made of strong materials like steel, bronze, and brass to help it withstand high temperatures and pressure as well as enable it to transmit high torque for large three-piece ball valves.

Ball
This is the component of a three-piece ball valve meant for closing/opening the ball valve. The ball has a bore or hole at its center. The fluid flows through the 3 piece ball valve via this hole.

Seats
Seats are internal components between the ball and the body of a 3 piece ball valve. Seats are used to provide a seal between the ball and the valve body as well as support the ball.

Packing
Packing is a seal placed around the stem to prevent fluid from escaping.

Trim
Trim refers to components in the three-piece ball valve such as sleeves, ball, stem, seats, seating surfaces, and seal rings.

Performance of 3-Piece Ball Valves

3-piece ball valves are known for their superior performance, making them a popular choice in many industrial applications. One major benefit of these valves is their ease of operation. The quarter-turn or half-turn design allows for quick and easy opening and closing, making them ideal for applications that require frequent adjustments in flow rate. The positioning of the ball within the valve also minimizes obstruction, which reduces pressure drop and turbulence, leading to better flow efficiency.

Another advantage of 3-piece ball valves is their superior sealing capabilities. The three-piece construction provides a tight seal even in high-pressure environments, preventing leakage that could lead to system failure.

The materials used in constructing pneumatic ball valves also enhance their performance. For example, stainless steel construction offers better corrosion resistance and durability, making these valves ideal for harsh industrial environments. 3-piece ball valves can also handle a wide range of temperatures, making them adaptable to different industrial settings.

Additionally, when it comes to maintenance, 3-piece ball valves are relatively easy to repair and maintain, as their three-piece construction allows for individual replacement of parts that may have worn or become damaged.

Overall, 3-piece ball valves provide superior performance compared to other types of valves, making them an ideal choice for many industrial applications.

Uses of Three-Piece Ball Valves

Three-piece ball valves have been used since so long in multiple industries, including:

Food and Beverage

These valves are often used in the food and beverage industry to regulate the flow of ingredients and products, such as milk, water, and beer.

Chemical Industry

Flow of chemicals and other substances is also controlled by three-piece ball valves in chemical processing.

Oil and Gas

These valves are commonly used in the oil and gas industry to regulate the flow of oil and gas during production. Find them available easily at the three-piece ball valve manufacturing companies.

3PC Ball Valve Working Principle

Opening Process

In the closed position, the ball is pressed against the valve seat by the mechanical pressure of the valve stem.
When the handwheel is turned counterclockwise, the valve stem moves in the opposite direction, and its bottom angular plane frees the ball from the valve seat.
The valve stem continues to lift and interacts with the guide pin in the spiral groove of the valve stem, causing the ball to rotate without friction.
Once it reaches the fully open position, the valve stem reaches its limit position, and the ball is fully rotated to the open position.

Closing Process

When closing, turn the handwheel clockwise. The valve stem begins to lower, and the ball moves away from the valve seat, starting to rotate.
As the handwheel continues to turn, the valve stem is guided by the pin embedded in the upper spiral groove, causing both the valve stem and the ball to rotate 90°.
As the valve approaches closure, the ball has rotated 90° without contacting the valve seat.
In the final few turns of the handwheel, the angular plane at the bottom of the valve stem wedges against the ball, pressing it tightly against the valve seat to achieve a complete seal.

Why Is A Three Piece Ball Valve A Full Port?

This 3 piece body design allows a larger ball to be installed at the time of manufacture, making this a full bore ball valve (Full port) .

Full port means that the bore has the same inside diameter as the piping.

This means is that pressure drop is kept to a minimum and flow rate is unaffected.

Difference Between 2-Piece and 3-Piece Ball Valves

The main difference between a 2-piece and a 3-piece ball valve is in their construction. A 2-piece valve is assembled in two separate parts-the body and the stem. A 3-piece valve, on the other hand, consists of three parts-the body, stem, and bonnet. The bonnet fits over the stem to provide an additional seal against leaks.

The advantage of using a 2-piece valve is that it is usually less expensive than a 3-piece model. It is also easier to install since it requires fewer components. On the other hand, a 3-piece valve provides more secure seals against leaks due to its additional component (the bonnet). It also offers better flow control since the handle can be adjusted from side to side for precise flow rate adjustment.

Both valves are available in different materials, such as brass, steel, or stainless steel, depending on your needs. While both types of valves can be used for hot and cold water applications, it is essential to note that some materials may not be suitable for certain applications. Therefore, always check with your local plumbing supplier before purchasing either type of valve.

Two-Piece Ball Valve
A two-piece ball valve has a body composed of two halves that are threaded together. This type of valve is less expensive to manufacture than a three-piece ball valve but less durable. Additionally, a two-piece ball valve is more likely to leak than a three-piece ball valve.

Three-Piece Ball Valve
A three-piece ball valve has a body composed of three pieces that are welded together. This type of valve is more expensive to manufacture than a two-piece ball valve, but it is more durable. Additionally, a three-piece ball valve is less likely to leak than a two-piece valve.

Material
Two-piece ball valves are typically made from cheaper materials than three-piece ball valves. For example, two-piece ball valves may be made from cast iron, while three-piece ball valves are typically made from stainless steel. The material differences between the two types of valves can affect both the price and durability.

Pressure Rating
Two-piece ball valves are typically rated for lower pressures than three-piece ball valves. For example, a two-piece ball valve may be rated for pressures up to 150 psi, while a three-piece ball valve may be rated for pressures up to 600 psi. The pressure rating of the valve will determine the applications for which the valve can be used.

Temperature
Two-piece and three-piece ball valves can typically withstand similar temperatures. However, some materials can only be used in low-temperature applications. For example, PTFE seats and seals can only be used in applications with temperatures below 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between a 1 piece and 3 piece ball valve?

A: In short, the main difference between 1, 2, and 3-piece ball valves is their body design. A one-piece ball valve has only one body portion. Two-piece ball valves have two body components threaded together or bolted together. Three-piece valves, on the other hand, have three independent components.

Q: What is a 3-way ball valve?

A: A 3-way ball valve is a valve type with three ports, also known as openings. The connection between the ports has a metal ball with openings to control the media's flow direction. Fluid or gas (media) flows through the valve, and there's a mechanism to turn the ball, which directs flow from one place to another.

Q: What is the difference between a 2 piece valve and a 3 piece valve?

A: The main advantage for a 2 piece vs 3 piece ball valve is that the 2 piece ball valves are cheaper. The main advantage for a 3 piece ball valve vs 2 piece is that you can easily change the seals by unbolting the end caps and removing the centre section.

Q: What is a part 3 ball valve?

A: Bottom Entry Part 3 Ball Valve 1/2" is used to fill water tanks such as toilet cisterns from the bottom. It is designed to be used in conjunction with a ball float. The ball float rises as the water rises and when a specified level is reached it causes the one way valve to be activated and shut off the water entry.

Q: What is one piece ball valve?

A: The 1 piece ball valve has one body part making it a robust and cost effective option. The One Piece Ball Valve has a standard port which is also called a reduced port since the ID of the valve is one size smaller than the ID of the pipe size it attaches to.

Q: Why use a 3-way valve?

A: Increased Versatility: With the ability to mix, divert, and bypass fluid flows, 3-way valves offer greater control and flexibility than 2-way valves, which can only open or close a single flow path.

Q: Why use a 3 piece ball valve?

A: The 3-piece ball valve is ideal for high-cycle, high-pressure applications that experience a great deal of wear and tear. Most notably, 3-piece ball valves offer the ability to remove components for cleaning or repairs, sometimes while the valve body is still in place.

Q: What is the difference between a 3 piece and 1 piece valve?

A: The big difference between the two is that the body on the 3 piece valve can be taken out without disturbing the two end caps. A two-piece ball valve doesn't often allow this to happen, and it's not possible at all with a one piece ball valve. There's also a price difference.

Q: What is the difference between a one piece and two piece ball valve?

A: The 1pc ball valve is a solid, one-piece design that offers simplicity and reliability. It is commonly used in residential applications and low-pressure systems. On the other hand, the 2pc ball valve consists of two separate pieces that can be easily dismantled for maintenance or repairs.

Q: How does a 3-way ball valve work?

A: How a 3-Way Ball Valve Works. A 3-way ball valve works by turning the handle, which rotates a ball in the valve body, to align the cut-out channels in the ball with the inlets and outlets of the valve. The "L" shape cut-out of the ball on an L-port valve sends fluid through 90 degrees from one port to another.

Q: What is the difference between a ball valve and a regular valve?

A: As we mentioned, ball valves operate by rotating a ball 90° while gate valves are controlled by moving a gate up or down. Because of their design, ball valves can perform an almost immediate shutoff, whereas gate valves are not able to act as quickly.

Q: Why is it called a 3 2 valve?

A: A 3/2 valve has three ports and two positions. The two positions refers to two different working positions (ON, OFF) of the pneumatic solenoid valve core. The valve core controls different gas passages when the valve gains and losses power.

Q: What is the difference between a ball valve and a pressure reducing valve?

A: So, can a ball valve reduce water pressure? Due to the fact that a ball valve should only be fully open or fully closed, it is not advisable to use a ball valve to control pressure. For this application, it's always best to use a pressure reducing valve, also known as a pressure regulator.

Q: Does ball valve increase pressure?

A: To answer your question; A ball valve only controls flow not pressure. A few seconds after water is flowing a ball valve will limit the pressure based on the flow. A pressure regulator requires no more plumbing than a ball valve.

Q: What is the difference between a 2 piece and 3 piece ball valve?

A: The main difference between 2 piece and 3 piece ball valves is that the latter is costlier but can be disassembled, serviced, and reassembled. Ultimately, the choice between the two boils down to budget and maintenance needs.
