What is Split-Body Ball Valve
A split body ball valve consists of a valve body divided into two or more pieces, which are then bolted around the ball with a flanged connection.

The most obvious advantage of split body ball valves is their ease of maintenance: The two or three flanged pieces can be separated to provide access to the interior. The ability to clean and repair the valve without removing it from the piping system extends the life of the valve and saves plants money on replacements.
What are the Materials of Split Ball Valves?
Different materials get used in the manufacturing of Split Ball Valves.
The most common and reliable of them are:
- Stainless Steel
- Carbon Steel
- Cast Iron
- Brass or bronze
- Plastic
The working and durability of split ball valves depend as well as varies on the type of material it is made of.
The type of material which gets used in the making also makes the product either cheap or expensive.
Good quality material prevents mishaps, makes the function of the split ball valve better in many ways, be it leakage control, pressure bearing ability, temperature resistance, or prevention of rust.
How They Work Of Split-Body Ball Valve
The split body construction consists of two halves that are bolted together. This design allows for easy disassembly and access to the valve internals without disconnecting the valve from the pipeline.
Inside the valve body, there is a hollow ball with a hole (bore) through its center. The ball has a passage that aligns with the pipeline when the valve is in the open position, allowing fluid to flow through. When the valve is closed, the ball is rotated 90 degrees using the valve's handle or actuator, blocking the flow path.
Split body ball valves can be operated manually using a handle or lever, or they can be automated using various types of actuators, such as electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators. Actuators allow for remote or automatic control of the valve.
The sealing mechanism in a ball valve consists of seats, usually made of soft materials like PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or other resilient materials. When the ball is rotated into the closed position, these seats create a tight seal against the ball, preventing leakage.

Uses of Split-Body Ball Valve
Split-body ball valves are commonly used in many industries, including oil & gas production, water treatment plants, chemical processing facilities, food & beverage processing plants, pulp & paper mills, and more! These valves are so popular because they are reliable and easy to operate due to their simple design. Additionally, they require very little maintenance since all you need to do turn a handle!
The Body
The body of the ball valve is the structure. It keeps all the other components together. The body attaches to the pipes that are part of the pipe network. You can get the body of ball valves in either one, two, or three separate pieces.
The Stem
You call the shaft that links the internal ball to a handle the ball valve stem. It transmits the actual quarter-turn pressure movement from the lever to the remote ball part.
The Ball In the Valve
The hollow sphere in the center of the valve is the ball part. When you turn the valve, it either allows or prevents the media from moving through.
Ball Valve Packing
The ball valve packing section prevents any leakage from the valve. The packing also prevents the escape of media to the outside environment.
The Ball Valve Bonnet
The bonnet is the valve housing, which covers the packing and the stem. It provides secondary leakage protection.
The Ball Valve Seat
The ball valve seat secures the ball component, providing a secondary layer of protection against leaks as the valve closes.
The Actuator or Handle
This actuator or handle exists outside of the body. This item is responsible for opening and closing the valve.
Understanding the Different Types of Ball Valves in the Market
Ball valves come in a variety of types, each designed for specific applications and to handle different types of fluids. Here are some of the most common types of ball valves:
Full-Port Ball Valves: These have a hole in the ball that aligns in size with the inlet and outlet ports, offering low resistance to flow and minimal pressure drop.
Reduced Port Ball Valves: The hole in the ball is smaller than the inlet and outlet ports.
Multi-Port Ball Valves: These have more than two ports, offering multiple flow paths.
V-Port Ball Valves: These have a 'v' shaped ball or a 'v' shaped seat. This type of valve also offers stable control during throttling conditions.
Single Body, Three-Piece Body, Split Body, Top Entry, and Welded Ball Valves: These types are based on how the pieces of the valve, especially the casing that contains the ball itself, are manufactured and assembled.
